Biros, ballpoints, felt tips;whatever they're called, they've revolutionised our lives. Imagine carrying a nib pen or quill, bottle of ink and blotter in your handbag or pocket?

You're grateful for it? Why? Or shall I surmise that it is a very useful part of your anatomy for you to speak from?

The anatomical part of your comment is about right...

I'm glad you didn't say anything about it being a pen holder Pauline

I remember using pencils at school, always breaking the nib and how hard it was to write with them! when you finally graduated to biros it was bliss. How comforting it was and still is to put the pen in your mouth whilst thinking. You can't do that with a bottle of ink!

I remember the first biros we had at school;red and yellow plastic casing. How exciting it was to write with one! I put a pen in my mouth too-and am glad it's not a mouthful of feather quill.

Gosh I remember it too red and yellow plastic casing. I had forgotten that! The excitement was similar to a child today getting a game console I guess! we were easily pleased!

Not going to show my age...
But inkwells at the top of the school desk and the 'daily monitor' who had to mix the powder with the water each morning for those wooden pens with a knib.
Oh yes....I am thankful for the ballpoint pens.

From your lovely photo, you don't look old enough to remember inkwells and nib pens.
Is that how ink was produced by water on powder? I was expecting a giant Quink (is that what it was called?) bottle on the teacher's desk.
Children must have been in a right state with all ink stains on them

OMG....remember in a few days time (Monday...) I am 61...just received a birthday card from my aged aunt whom is 93 years YOUNG!!!!!
Yes water and ink powder...knibs that were mounted on wooden shafts...and yes we got real inky before the yellow ballpoint came out.
Then remember? Yellow ballpoint was a health hazzard as children could choke on the tops. Then they made them with little holes in them.

The tops? -that would have been a way to get rid of a few of us undesirable types

Then Health and Safety had to intrude!-

Whoopy.....yes remind me of that one.
Health and Safety have a load to answer for.

I love pens and pencils, and carry them with me wherever I go

They must be part of your professional equipment

I used to love a Staedtler Turquoise fine nib ballpoint-I don't think you can get them any more. If any one from that company is reading this-please send me a box.-

I will look out for these, because they sound like something I would love. Usually an honest person, I always warn friends to lock up their pens....as I might just disappear with one of them
Hope you have a lovely Tuesday

Pens breed and proliferate and then disappear-I'll suspect you now Janet as being the Pen Fairy!!

Going back even further....BEFORE SCHOOL....I had a slate to write on

You'll be telling me that you used a hammer and chisel on a tablet of stone next!
The only slates I've seen have been in a museum of a Victorian school. What did they use to mark the slate?-
- 2009-10-22 @ 14:04:21
I was trying to remember when I wrote that comment what was used to mark the slate...I can't remember

Can just remember writing on a slate that was framed in wood...with perhaps? another piece of slate to scratch onto.

BTW.....
Not one with an inkwell...but I do have here at home a desk, carved with all the graffiti of kids. One of those double desks we (or some) remember from school.
